A baby shower descended into a punch up involving relatives of a famous darts star and in-laws after a series of lighthearted games turned sour.

The party, at Lochore Miners’ Welfare Social Club in Fife, ended in violence with an expectant husband’s mother being punched and his grandmother saying she had her essential feeding tube dislodged, a court heard. 

Sarah Wilson, 45, of Kirkcaldy, admitted during a trial at Dunfermline Sheriff Court that on May 18 last year she assaulted Pamela Ritchie by seizing her by the hair and repeatedly punching her on the body. 

Meanwhile her daughter Chardonnay Wilson, also of Kirkcaldy, was found guilty of assaulting Yvonne Ritchie, the grandmother of the father-to-be.

The two defendants have now spoken out following the trial as Sarah Wilson awaits sentencing – as it was revealed they are related to the late Scottish darts player Jocky Wilson. 

Sarah is the niece and Chardonnay the great-niece of Jocky Wilson, who won the World Professional Darts Championship in 1982 and 1989. He died aged 62 in 2012. 

The baby shower was for Chardonnay’s sister Chantelle, who was celebrating the imminent arrival of her baby daughter, and started at 1pm. 

The two families were sitting at different tables and ‘at first it was fine’, the court heard.

But ill feeling began to build during a game called ‘Would Mummy Rather’ when someone asked the question: ‘Would mummy rather put a bottle on for the baby or open a bottle of wine?’ 

Someone from the father-to-be’s family then shouted out the new mother would opt for a bottle of wine. Chardonnay Wilson told the court: ‘Chantelle got upset and everything started to escalate from there.’ 

Her mother Sarah and the other mother Ms Ritchie were ‘arguing back and forward’, the court heard.

Chardonnay Wilson said: ‘My mum told her they could speak any other day but not to spoil the occasion.’

But arguing continued during a game of ‘Baby Bingo’ and there were allegations of sexual comments being made.

And there were then claims about an abusive comment, aimed at the Wilsons, being written on a paper plate.

Chardonnay Wilson said she had also written a message in the baby book, but someone had ripped it out.

Rows continued over what are usually light-hearted games and the bad feeling carried on outside the venue, where the assaults occurred.

Gino Gambale, Chardonnay Wilson’s solicitor, asked for his client to be given an absolute discharge as a conviction would end her career as a carer. 

He said she had worked as a carer for the elderly and vulnerable for the past three years, starting at the age of 18.

He said: ‘This was the baby shower for her sister and as we’ve heard tensions heightened throughout the day.

‘The families were not getting on and this has spilled outside. This was a serious assault but something that happened very quickly.’

Sheriff Susan Duff said it would ‘not be proportionate’ to impose a sentence which would end a young person’s career in this case.

She therefore agreed to the defence request for an absolute discharge, which means under Scottish law the offence will not go on Wilson’s record despite being found guilty.

Speaking after the case, Sarah Wilson has told the Daily Record: ‘I’m Jocky Wilson’s niece and Chardonnay is his great niece but that has nothing to do with any of this.’ 

Chardonnay continues to deny claims she was behind an attack on Yvonne Ritchie by punching or kicking her and trying to pull out the breathing tube.

Chardonnay told the newspaper: ‘I didn’t touch her feeding tube and I didn’t pull her feeding tube out. I didn’t do anything. It took three of them to try and attack me.’

‘I was accused of battering Yvonne and I was accused of attempting to pull her feeding tube out. This has gone on for two years.’

Chantelle herself has posted on Facebook in support of her sister and her mother following the trial, sharing a photo of them.

Sarah Wilson is due to be sentenced next month after the sheriff called for reports.
